The Buell Racing Legend Continues

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

On October 15, 2009, the Harley Davidson Corporation told the world that their Buell business of sport, adventure, and street motorcycles would be discontinued. Harley wanted to focus on their primary Harley Davidson marque. The closing Buell cycle was made on October 30, making a total of 136,923 Buell bikes created during its 17 year partnership with Harley Davidson.

While not as large in terms of sales volume as the motorcycles of the Harley brand, Buell’s cycles had a more low-toned but devoted following. Buell cycles were considered by many to be fast fun cycles to ride and race, but also among the more innovative of U.S. built motorbikes. They incorporated a patented original brake plan that placed the brake discs on the outside edge of the wheel rather than near the hub for better suspension, control, and cornering. Other Buell innovations included the use of fuel-in-frame technology, and the use of the swing arm as an oil resevoir. Buell power plants were also designed to be street and owner friendly, getting upwards of 70 miles per gallon, and being no problem to fix.

But the Buell motorcycle isn’t totally deceased. A month after closing his business relation with Harley Davidson, Erik Buell declared the introduction of an independent race compnay listed as Erik Buell Racing. Established in East Troy, Wisconsin, Erik Buell Racing will be staffed by an experienced squad of Buell racing staff. The goal of the fledgling shop is to support Buell 1125R racers. The young Buell Racing venue will be making race-use-only Buell 1125R motorbikes under permit from Harley Davidson, and providing repair parts, services, and technical support to Buell cycle racing teams. Erik Buell said of the new business: “Im looking forward to helping Buell racers keep their bikes flying. Weve got some exciting race development projects in the works and it will mean a lot to me personally to see Buell racers competing for wins and championships in the 2010 season and beyond.”
